Lower Ground Floor Transformation, Islington
This project involved the reconfiguration of a listed townhouse in Islington, focusing on transforming an underused lower ground floor into a functional and welcoming family space.
Originally, the lower ground floor had low ceiling heights of approximately 2 metres, resulting in a series of dark and constrained rooms that were difficult to use as part of everyday living.
The design centred on increasing the ceiling height to approximately 2.5 metres, significantly improving the sense of space, light and usability. This intervention allowed the floor to be reimagined as a generous open-plan living area with direct access to the garden.
The new layout creates a clear and connected family space, bringing together kitchen, dining and living functions in a way that feels open yet comfortable for daily use.
Bespoke joinery was designed throughout to maximise storage and ensure that every part of the space is used efficiently. These elements are carefully integrated within the architecture, maintaining a clean and cohesive interior.
The result is a bright and spacious lower ground floor that has been fully reintegrated into the life of the house, transforming what was once a constrained basement into the heart of the home.
